Moon Clay (Moon Community)

I did not have to put this clay in the dewatering tub. It settled enough on its own that it didn’t need it. I only rough screened this clay (window screen).

It dewaters extremely fast compared to the clays around my house. I poured out the batch to dewater at 2:14pm. As you can see, it was fairly runny still. I pulled it up at 6:35pm. My normal clays would take at least 24 hrs to dewater.

The smallish test bowl dried fine without cracking, and I left it outside. Threw it in the morning and trimmed it in the evening. A bird or bug visited it while it was still wet. Surprisingly, the drying shrinkage on this clay still measures 12%. However, it still seems like it will dry without cracking.

The clay is a bit rougher than I like. It doesn’t seem to be sand, however, but small shale fragments. You can get an idea of the fragments from the last photo.

I’m out of clay at the moment. I think I’m going to have to throw a bunch of flower pots out of unfluxed stuff to get a kiln load, so I can do some firing tests.
