This is my large clay dewatering setup made from livestock mineral tubs (the kind that hold 200 lbs). I use it after wet sieving my wild (dug) clays, allowing the clay to settle before siphoning off the excess water.
The slideshow shows the consistency of the clay slurry before dewatering, the dewatering setup, and the finished product.
Some clays take longer to dewater than others, and the weather affects the process as well. This particular batch took only 24 hours. I scraped the sides and bottom a few times during the day to keep the moisture consistent throughout the clay.
At this point, it’s ready to be mixed with other ingredients or dried further before making pottery.
